DBA Silencing is elated to offer the following services at our satellite facility.
Sand Blasting
At DBA Silencing, we have multiple sand blasting setups for scouring both steel and aluminum. We have an exterior tent facility for blasting large items such as boat trailers, and an interior cabinet for cleaning smaller or more delicate objects. In both cases, our rate is $120/hr, with a one-hour minimum.
We have a number of commercial sand blasting clients who typically have us cleaning the surfaces of industrial components. There are, in addition, many members of our community who bring us items such as deck railings, art projects, gun cabinets, and rusty family heirlooms. We also have car enthusiasts coming in with vehicle rims, engine parts, and other automotive units.
Our lead time for sand blasting projects varies according to how busy we are at any given moment. We generally aim to complete orders within one or two weeks.
Powder Coating
In addition to sand blasting, we offer powder coating, which provides a durable finish far stronger than paint. Our rate is the same as above: $120/hr, with a one-hour minimum. Additional charges may apply if large quantities of powder coat are required, or custom colours are ordered.
In most cases, we powder coat pieces with a single colour. That said, multi-hue pieces are possible. In many instances we can also match particular shades. Or at least get pretty close. We have thousands of standard colours to choose from, and our customers are also able to make selections related to glossiness, texture, and even level of iridescence or sparkliness.
For those curious about the powder coating procedure, we utilize a four-step process. We start by prepping the surfaces to be coated. We abrade the surfaces to improve adhesion and remove any oils. We then bake off impurities in our oven and spray the items in our booth. The final step is a second baking which hardens, or cures, the powder coat.
Lead times for powder coating will also vary according to what we have in the queue. In some cases, orders take slightly longer because we prioritize items needed by our manufacturing department. DBA Silencing makes exhaust parts and exhaust systems for the mining industry and, in some cases, we increase the longevity of our proprietary composite shells by powder coating them. Precision Cutting
DBA employs a water jet cutting machine to produce the flanges that we use on our exhaust and coolant components. But when our equipment is not being utilized for this purpose, we allow others to take advantage of its capabilities. Our table can cut material up to 4″ thick, and do so with a much higher degree of precision than comparable plasma devices. Water jet technology is also superior in that, while plasma machines are limited to metal, water jet units can cut rubber, plastic, wood, tile, ceramics, and even some types of glass.
Our cutting clients are mostly commercial, and we produce items such as kicker and alternator brackets. The rate for precision cutting is the same as for sand blasting and powder coating: $120/hr, with a one-hour minimum. Lead times change from month to month, depending on flange demand, but we’re typically able to complete orders within a couple of weeks.
Metal Art Creation
We also use our water jet cutting machine for art. Our creations range from tiny metal Christmas ornaments to enormous municipal installations. We’ve made pieces for customers such as the RCMP, the Capitol Theatre, and the Furever Endeavour Rescue Network. There are also DBA masterpieces on the walls of dozens of homes in the Alberni Valley.
We do have some pieces available for viewing in our showroom, but mostly we make items to order. If you’d like us to cut you some art, we have books containing hundreds of designs that you’re more than welcome to peruse. You can also find a design online, on sites such as Etsy. Look for DXF files: they’re the easiest for us. And finally, lots of people have us make custom pieces. If you’re interested in a tailor-made item, please provide us with some information on things like size and colour and we’ll respond with a quote.
Metal Sign Manufacturing
Signage is really just a particular form of metal art. We’ve made address signs and house numbers for an assortment of Port Alberni residences, and signs with logos for organizations such as the City of Port Alberniand Tseshaht First Nation. While we don’t perform installations, we can offer you tips. If you’d like an estimate on signage, please furnish us with some details on design, dimensions, preferred colour, and so on.
Firepit Production
While we don’t currently have many models available for viewing in our showroom, we can produce a wide array of beautiful and functional firepits. We recently made a custom firepit for an 80th birthday party that featured a boat, a banjo, and a number of the celebrant’s other passions.
