In today’s piece, we’re going to narrow our focus and offer up a smorgasbord of information on V-Band clamps specifically. Bon appétit!
Appetizer: What Are V-Band Clamps?
Most mining truck exhaust systems contain multiple pipes. These pipes are made from materials such as stainless steel, aluminized steel, and even black steel. {We discuss the pros and cons of each, if you’re interested, in our blog post “Stainless Steel Exhaust vs Aluminized Steel Exhaust“.} In some cases, these pipes are linked together using bolts, gaskets, and flanges {which are welded to the ends of the exhaust tubing}. A gasket is placed between the flat faces of two flanges and then everything is locked into place with multiple nuts and bolts.
As you can imagine, this method of mating sections of tubing does have disadvantages. It can, for instance, be difficult to tighten the bolts evenly. Undertightening one or more bolts can lead to a leaky connection. Same goes for overtightening; a damaged gasket will often allow exhaust gases to escape.
The use of V-Band clamps eliminates a number of these issues. Only a single nut needs to be tightened, and the entire clamp presses in around the joint. This helps create a leak-free seal. Replacing a one-bolt V-Band clamp is also, of course, much faster and easier than removing a four-bolt assembly. In addition, there’s no need to mess around with fiddly gaskets.
V-Band clamps also excel in high-heat situations. This is because, as exhaust system temperatures climb above 500°C, the metal components expand and this further strengthens the connection by closing microscopic gaps and wedging the flanges together more securely.
Entrée: Why Use DBA Clamps?
At DBA Silencing, we sell a lot of V-Band clamps for mining trucks. In some cases, we receive orders for single units. In other instances, customers such as Liebherr purchase hundreds of clamps at a time.
Why do they choose V-Bands from DBA? Well, there are a number of reasons. The first is undoubtedly quality. Our stainless steel clamps are industrial-grade units that can withstand the many rigours of the field. They can handle sub-zero temperatures in the Alberta oil sands as well as blistering heat in the Australian outback. They remain reliable when exposed to not only corrosive agents such as road salt, but also stresses such as constant vibration.
Another reason is cost-effectiveness. Most DBA parts come with a significantly smaller price tag than their OEM equivalents and other aftermarket comparables. Our V-Band clamps for mining trucks are no exception. We offer a number of sizes: 6″, 7″, 8″, 10″, and 12″. Although our coolant systems mostly feature U-Bolt clamps and our air intake systems primarily employ hose clamps, our popular exhaust systems utilize V-Bands. In some cases, many of them. Finally, there is our unique thermal management technology. Most truck fires are a result of operating fluids such as oils leaking or spraying onto heated exhaust pipes. Some companies try to reduce the surface temperature of exhaust components by utilizing double-walled tubing. Other firms employ blankets. Side Order: V-Band Clamp Pro Tips
V-Band clamps are relatively straightforward to install. There are, however, a few things to keep in mind.
- You’ll want to prep your surfaces. We recommend cleaning both flange faces thoroughly, and deburring any rough edges. {We trust it goes without saying that you should only be working on systems that have been given time to cool down.}
- Alignment is key. Your V-Band clamps can’t pull together off-kilter pipes so you’ll want to ensure that your flanges are lined up.
- Many mine site mechanics apply anti-seize lubricant paste to the threads of their V-Band nuts and bolts. This practice reduces the likelihood that they’ll have to cut off the clamp when it eventually comes time to replace it. {Speaking of replacement: this should be done regularly in order to reduce clamp failures, which can lead to unwanted emissions and even expensive downtime.}
- Before tightening to the appropriate specifications, confirm that your V-Band clamp is seated properly and sitting evenly over both flanges. You may want to snug up the nut by hand, and then tap lightly around the circumference of the unit with a soft-faced mallet in order to make sure your seating is just right. Utilize a ratchet wrench rather than an impact gun.
- Performing a final check can’t hurt. Look for gaps and listen for leaks. If you hear a tick or a hiss, then your connection almost certainly requires some additional attention.
